2010 kia forte review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New stylish and affordable sedan. introductionthe kia forte is a new entry into the compact car field with contenders like honda civic, toyota corolla, nissan sentra, mazda 3, mitsubishi lancer, ford focus, and chevrolet cobalt. Most fuel-efficient, however, is the ex with the fuel economy package, which yields an epa-estimated 27/36 mpg.  most fun to drive is the forte sx equipped with a larger 2. 4-liter engine and five-speed automatic. We found the handling in the sx with its sport-tuned suspension taut. The ride is firm but never harsh. Upholstery is cloth. Air conditioning and a 60/40 split rear seat are optional 1500), while power windows, door locks and cruise control are not available. Wheels are the same 15-inch steel, but five-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels are optional. Options include leather upholstery with heated front seats and a power moonroof.  forte sx 17,195) uses a 2. 4-liter engine with a six-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic 1000). A sport-tuned suspension is standard, along with larger front brake rotors, and 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels. The upholstery is a sporty cloth, with metal-finish interior trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Full leather is optional. Fog lamps are standard.  safety features that come standard on all kia forte models include frontal and front side airbags, airbag curtains, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, traction control, and a tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe new kia forte is a looker. It's an excellent example of clean styling, nothing really fancy but with all the right lines. It's not a big car, and it doesn't look big.  it's shaped like a wedge, or appears to be, from the swept-back grille and headlamps carrying through climbing shoulders on the sides of the car, back to the short rear deck. From some angles it looks aggressive, from others subtle. Even the rear door seams carry this wedge line. The coefficient of drag is a low 0. 29, reflecting the clean wind-cutting shape.  refreshingly, there are no squared flares over the rear wheelwells. The large taillights have nice angles, and wrap horizontally around the corners of the car and into the trunk lid. The roofline is coupe-like. Body-colored mirrors and door handles, hooray.  the front fenders are subtly boxed, but there are no trendy flares there, either. The front valance between the grille and low air intakes is not bulky, as with too many cars, and the three black screened intakes that run the full width of the chin are tidy and businesslike.  the hood, too, is short, accenting the wedge. The short hood and deck mean efficient construction with no excess in overhangs, because the overall length is correct for the compact sedan class. The kia forte has one of the roomiest interiors in the compact sedan class, with a total of 96. 8 cubic feet of passenger volume. That's 3. 3 cubic feet more than the 2009 subaru legacy. And the forte's trunk space of 14. 7 cubic feet is best in class, matching the redesigned and enlarged midsize 2010 legacy.  headroom is good front and rear, while front legroom is ample and rear legroom is 35. 0 inches, good for a compact sedan.  the thing that kia does exceptionally well is execute. The korean manufacturer copies carefully, and perfects. There's no pretension about being original or unique with the forte interior, no attempt to re-invent anything. This is excellent, the intelligent antithesis of so many others especially german namely bmw and audi. Great firm but not tight bolstering. Given the performance difference, fuel mileage and lower base price by $1400 would be the only reason to choose the ex. And, considering there are many other worthwhile sx features, the loss of meat is not worth the savings. In other words, we'd spring for the sx.  however there might be an exception. There is a fuel economy package with the ex, including five-speed automatic, electric power steering, a smart alternator, silica tires for low rolling resistance, and an aerodynamic kit that costs $1600, making an eco ex about the same price as a sporty sx, but it raises the fuel mileage to 27/36 mpg. The sx makes a fine 173 horsepower, and its 168 pound-feet peaks at 4000 rpm. It's fun to work the transmission to use the power; the sportmatic manual mode in the five-speed automatic makes shifting easy.  forte is a brand-new car and it uses a new ground-up chassis, caging 63 percent of the cabin with high-strength steel, plus ultra high-strength steel in the side sills. This increases rigidity and improves handling. The sx front brakes use 11. 8-inch vented discs, and the rears 10. 3-inch solid discs, employing an anti-lock brake system with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. Plenty big and responsive for a car of this weight, we can say after using them hard through a twisty section. Ex brakes are the same, but with 11. 0-inch front discs.  the forte is quite nimble and fun to drive, with power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and a very tight turning circle. Among the compact sedans we named in the opening overview, we'd say the forte feels most like the mitsubishi lancer. The long wheelbase and wide stance are felt in the ride and cornering. Maybe especially the ride, satisfactory on every surface we drove the sx. The sx comes with firmer springs and shocks and a larger front anti-roll bar, which is another reason it's a great value for just $1400 more than the ex.  for real sport-driving excitement, watch for the forte koup (as in coupe), coming soon.  we tested the forte right after the all-new subaru legacy, and it might not be fair to compare the two because they're in a different class, but we can say that the forte did not feel as solid as the legacy. It felt lighter, if not tinnier. And it is lighter, by about 500 pounds, tipping the scales at a lithe 2868 pounds.

2003 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, smoother, more comfortable, more convenient. introductionford has launched an all-new expedition. This second-generation model shares almost nothing with last year's model. It's packed with new features, but the biggest improvement is its ride quality, a benefit of a new independent rear suspension.  when i last drove the expedition, it was for a long comparison test with one of its prime competitors. My fatigued co-tester was eager to trade vehicles with me. Indeed, keeping the giant sport utility, with its darty steering, sloppy suspension and rough ride, on the straight and narrow was tough duty. A driver could comfortably stay behind the wheel for the entire trip without fatigue, and the expedition would have a great shot at beating competitors in a comparison test. That's how much better the 2003 model is over its predecessor. Ride and handling are greatly improved, the steering is more responsive and more stable on the open road.  new features for the 2003 expedition include a power third-row seat that disappears with the press of a button, leaving a large, perfectly flat cargo area. The interior is all new. A small center seat on the second row slides forward to give front-seat parents access to a small child. Safety is enhanced with a lower front bumper, an optional safety curtain designed to protect occupants in a rollover, adjustable pedals, a tire-pressure monitor, and advanced electronics designed to help the driver maintain control.  the ford expedition and lincoln navigator full-size sport utilities were originally introduced as 1997 models for people who needed three rows of seats like a minivan but wanted to trade the soccer-mom image for the rugged, outdoorsy appearance of an suv. At that time, few competitors existed, primarily the chevrolet suburban and other full-size utilities from general motors. Toyota has since added the sequoia, and gm has launched additional iterations of its full-size and almost full-size sport utilities.  . lineupa choice of engines is offered in the expedition: the standard 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 232 horsepower and the 5. 4-liter v8 that produces 291 horsepower. The xlt is equipped well.  eddie bauer adds front captain's chairs with two tone-leather and 6-way driver power, automatic climate control with rear a/c, a premium sound system, arizona beige lower body side cladding, floor console, overhead console, 11 cup holders, fog lights, privacy glass with power flip-open rear windows, satin nickel grille, homelink, electrochromic mirror, power outside heated mirrors with memory, security approach lamps and integrated turn signals, power adjustable pedals with memory, power driver's seat with memory, reverse sensing system, black non-illuminated running boards.  expedition prices run a wide range: xlt 2wd 30,555); xlt 4wd 33,425); eddie bauer 2wd 37,050); eddie bauer 4wd 41,195). Numerous packages are available for the xlt. A fully loaded eddie bauer edition goes for nearly $45,000.  an fx4 off-road package 4,185) is available on xlt models that features distinctive exterior cues that give it a more rugged appearance, including tubular steel running boards, foglamps, an fx4 badge on the liftgate. Unique 17-inch chromed steel wheels and all-terrain tires complement special shocks tuned for off-road performance.  . walkaroundin spite of all the changes underneath, there is little to visually distinguish the new 2003 ford expedition over the 2002 model. A new expedition owner may be unhappy when the neighbors don't notice they've traded the old one in for the new model. Then again, maybe not. Auto companies have found it doesn't always pay to mess with winning formulas.  with roughly the same overall dimensions as before, the new expedition looks bigger and bolder than its predecessor. The track has been widened nearly two inches to give it a well-planted stance. The standard wheels increased to 17 inches for a bolder look. The roof height is lower. Bumpers are integrated more smoothly into the overall design. Previously, the expedition's interior was virtually identical to the lincoln navigator and the ford f-150 pickup trucks upon which they are based. In this new generation, however, distinctions have been made. The navigator is far fancier than the expedition, which, while quite refined, has a more outdoorsy, everyday workhorse ambiance.  the ford expedition's interior is dressed up with a metallic satin finish on such items as the rings that surround the vents and door handles. Shapes are round, and controls are hefty for an easy grip.  storage space is generous. The front center console available in some versions of the expedition can fit a small laptop computer. The console has a slot to hold pens and a palm pilot or other pdas. The lighter colors used for the upholstery give it a lighter, more car-like air.  the interior features a number of clever and useful innovations, some of them industry firsts. The third-row seat splits 60-40. Push a button on the wall of the cargo area, and one side powers down. Hold down the other button, and the other side powers down. The honda odyssey minivan introduced the fold-flat third-row seat, which is accomplished simply in a non high-tech fashion by pulling a couple of straps. The power-down buttons are more convenient. One side did not power up without a hand because the headrest didn't retract fully, creating too snug a fit against the second row seatback. We assume this has been addressed in production.  when folded down, the cargo floor is perfectly flat, in contrast to some expedition competitors who say the floor folds flat but actually slant. The flat floor combined with the flaps that cover the gap where the seats hinge make it easy to slide objects in and out. It proved invaluable during a variety of typical weekend chores. We changed the expedition repeatedly from a people hauler to a cargo hauler and back again with just a simple push of the button. After dumping that off, a pack of teenagers piled in to go to a punk rock concert. The third row is comfortable enough for a couple of full-size adults. The next day we picked up a high-backed wicker chair from the furniture store.  the second row features a clever feature ford claims is another industry first. The bench seat splits roughly into thirds. The middle section moves forward by about 11 inches, almost abutting it to the back of the front center console. That gives front-seat parents access to a small child or a child in a safety seat. The small center seatback can also be folded down and used as a work surface. The two outboard second-row seats fold easily forward for access to the third-row seat.  the expedition can be outfitted with enough safety equipment to create a cocoon inside in case of an accident. Dual-stage front airbags are standard. The expedition is now outfitted with an independent rear suspension. The suspension, combined with a stiffer chassis, gives the expedition dramatically improved ride and handling. It makes the expedition feel far smaller than the large vehicle it is.  ford introduced a similar independent suspension on the 2002 explorer, but it's more common to cars than trucks. The efficient packaging of the independent rear suspension made it possible for ford engineers to accomplish a fold-flat third-row seat.  yet, the expedition doesn't sacrifice its truck-like capabilities. It still carries heavy loads and tows trailers and boats with the best of them.  another major mechanical improvement to the expedition was the switch to the more car-like rack-and-pinion steering system. The change significantly improves steering response. The new expedition requires only small inputs to the steering wheel, to which it answers immediately.  . summarythe all-. 2010 nissan versa review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Versatile, roomy and easy on the budget. introductionthe nissan versa is a nimble subcompact with comfort, performance, versatility, and generous interior space. It's easy on the budget to buy and easy on the budget to operate. The 2010 versa features fresh styling and an upgraded interior.  the versa is a big and roomy inside with decent head room and leg room and lots of hip room, making it a good choice for larger drivers. Its big, cushy seats are comfortable. Back-seat passengers will find rear-seat leg room as good as that in larger cars and suvs. All three are subcompacts designed with tall rooflines for increased interior comfort and visibility. All models have a new grille and wheels, and revised interior fabrics and finishes. The sl hatchback model gets sport front and rear fascias, body side sills, fog lights, and rear spoiler as standard equipment. An optional navigation system is being offered. Other changes for 2010 include auxiliary input added to the base audio system; interface system for ipod added to the upgraded radio.  most models come with a 1. 8-liter engine, though the stripper sedan model comes with a 1. 6-liter engine.  fuel economy for the nissan versa depends on the powertrain. Best is the versa sl with cvt (continuously variable transmission) with an epa-estimated 28/34 mpg city/highway. It comes with air conditioning (which can be deleted for a savings of $1,000), pre-wiring for audio. Anti-lock brakes are optional 250). The hatchback features a 60/40 split folding rear seat. Options include a power plus package 930) with power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, door armrest pads, rear-door map pockets, and automatic door locks; and vehicle dynamic control with traction control 370).  versa sl sedan 16,100) and sl hatchback 16,530) are fitted with the xtronic continuously variable transmission (cvt). Versa sl models are upgraded with premium woven seat fabric, a more adjustable driver's seat, split folding rear seats, center armrests front and rear, the power plus package, a 180-watt stereo with an in-dash six-cd changer and mp3 capability, and 15-inch machined alloy wheels.  a convenience package for the versa sl sedan 650) includes an intelligent key system, bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. A premium package for the sl hatchback 980) includes everything from the convenience package plus 16-inch alloy wheels. A moonroof package 600) for the sl hatchback adds a power glass sunroof and illuminated visor vanity mirrors. Both sl models are also available with the nav/sat radio 610), which includes a navigation system with five-inch screen and xm satellite radio.  accessories include splash guards 110), floor mats 155), auto-dimming inside mirror 125), and aluminum kick plates 130). A rear roof spoiler 250) and a new cargo organizer 160) can be added to the hatchback.  safety features include frontal airbags, side-impact airbags, roof-mounted curtain airbags, front-seat active head restraints, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) are standard on the s and sl trim levels and an option 250) on the base model. walkaroundthe nissan versa looks bigger than it is. The sl hatchback, with its front spoiler below the bumper, has a more aggressive and sporty look.  at the rear ends of the sedan and hatchback things are, expectedly, much different. With the hatchback, the side edges of the tailgate angle sharply inward to clear the cat's-eye taillights. With the sedan, the taillights are different but the trunk lid still angles inward. We like the hatchback a little better, especially the sl version with its roof-mounted spoiler.  the sedan is nearly seven inches longer than the hatchback and has a more conventional rear end, with a trunk. The sedan is handsome enough, with its long, tapering sail panels.  we find the hatchback more appealing. We like its distinctive styling and it's more versatile than the sedan. interiorthe huge front seats in the nissan versa are roomy and comfortable. As with the other cars in this class, the versa driver gets lots of legroom and headroom. In terms of hip room, however, the versa is a real standout. The width and the substantial structure of the front seats may make the versa a great choice among subcompacts for big drivers. The cloth-covered seats are comfortable without being too soft and offer plenty of side support.  the back seat is particularly impressive. Even a six-footer shouldn't feel cramped as the rear seat legroom is at or near the top of the class. No hard plastics here.  the instrument pod contains three large, well-recessed gauges that are easy to read. The speedometer takes pride of place in the center and almost seems as if it is floating over the other two gauges.  controls for the dash mounted radio and cd changer are well integrated into the center stack, and although they are not very large they are easy to see and comprehend. There is a large volume knob in the center with a very visible power button. Three functional, conventional knobs operate the climate control system. All in all there's nothing fancy about any of the controls, although everything looks well finished. Two large cupholders are conveniently located under the center stack.  the optional intelligent key allows for keyless starting of the engine, something that up until now has only been available in luxury cars. We don't recommend it. Tow truck operators tell us they get a lot of calls dealing with keyless starting systems. And we don't find them a big benefit.  cargo versatility is a strong point for the hatchback. There's a generous 17. 8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place. Versa sl with cvt, or continuously variable transmission, gets an epa-estimated 28/34 mpg city/highway. Nissan has been a standout in cvt technology. In addition to delivering exceptional fuel economy, it's very smooth and most drivers probably won't notice it's anything other than a regular automatic.  a cvt doesn't shift gears like an automatic transmission. Instead, a segmented belt rides up and down on cone-shaped pulleys to vary the speed ratio between the engine and the drivetrain. It works more efficiently than a traditional automatic, which is why the versa equipped with a cvt delivers such good highway mileage. Around town it has the same economy as a manual transmission, better than an automatic, in other words.  we've been pleased with the versa. It has plenty of zip and there's no problem merging into traffic on a fast free-flowing freeway. We found it not unpleasant. In regular stop-and-go traffic under slow acceleration there is no sensation other than the car moving forward smoothly with no sound or feel of shifting gears.
